Pencoed Tri Newsletter: April 2010
| Committee News |
| Mike - ChairFirst quarter of 2010 has been a real success. After the Drovers, the Pasta Party and regular visits to the Friday Club Night, the club members are really showing their support and we’re beginning to get that Summer feeling! I’d like to thank everyone who has supported the Club through attending training and social events in the last few months. It really makes our efforts (the Committee) seem worthwhile and we’re very proud to be helping to run your local triathlon club. Let’s have a great Summer and good luck to all those participating in events. Please keep us updated with your progress. It’s important to us. Alan - Treasurer – no news (he must be out training, Ed)
Debbie- Secretary/Welfare Officer – Still tidying up membership renewals –if you’ve yet to renew forms are available at the pool or let me know if you want one posted out (no on-line payment facility currently). At last count we have 40 active senior members and 15 juniors with lots of enquiries regarding membership coming in now the weathers’ improving. We hope to offer individual training/race goals reviews soon for new members and anyone who would find it a useful focusing process. The reviews will help us put on the right kind of sessions and club coaches will be aware of what you want from the club and can give you more tailored support/tips. Caroline -Social Secretary/Publicity Officer – Thanks to all members and their partners for coming along to the pasta night, it was nice to get together socially. Thanks to Celtic Tri and Cardiff Tri for coming along to have a chat too. We hope to arrange another social event around the kids triathlon. Weather permitting a BBQ after the kids Triathlon? New Members Welcome to our recent new members – Annemeike Silke (mum of Jasmine and Quinn) and, also following in the wake of kids/hubby, Rachel Knill.

| Please let us know what events you’ve taken part in and what’s looming on your race calendar – will give members an opportunity for shared training, mutual support, lift sharing etcThe Richard Jones/Gambling combo took part in the Port Talbot Wheelers 2up 25 mile time trial recently and just missed coming in under the hour (1.00.35) for a highly credible 6th place finish, taking the mixed team award.Adrian Cartlidge ran 1.30.35 in the Lanelli Half despite overcooking the first few miles and has been encouraged to come the Bridgend Thurs run sessions to improve his pace judgement! Simon Osborne has nearly calmed down after his drafting penalty (totally undeserved apparently) at the Clumber Park National Duathlon Champs - coming in 6th in his age group, with Worlds qualification in the bag I believe.
Morgan Davies finished the cross country season in superb style and we wish him well for the forthcoming tri season. Simon, Alan Kerr and Debbie all had podium places in their various categories for Bridgend AC teams at the Welsh 5km Road Relays at Llandow – and yes – it was windy as ever up there! Running 18.05, 19.38 and 20.54 respectively. Alan to be particularly commended as he’d done the Monmouth Tri in the morning! Debbie very excited to share the podium with Andrea Whitcombe!
Club Champs After first event, Atlantic College 10km, Simon (36.14 2ndV50), Adrian (40.15) and Debbie (41.52 2ndV40) have christened the scoreboard. Next event Gower Duathlon Saturday 15th May – get your entries in! (sprint or standard distance) Best wishes to Wayne Bryant running in the London marathon Nick Wager is undertaking an arduous charity bike ride around Wales in a few weeks – stopping off at all the kidney dialysis units. More info to follow. Stop Press: Alan Kerr, Simon Osborne and Debbie put in a good showing for Pencoed Tri at the Newport Duathlon last weekend. Simon 1st V50 1:03 Alan 2nd V50 1:09 Debbie 2nd V40 1:14 Please send in your race reports/news via pencoedtri@live.com Looking for a volunteer to put together members results – any offers?

| Coaching and Training |
| Llandow – Sessions have now resumed at the Llandow race track on alternating Wednesday nights. 6.30pm Check website for calendar. An ideal traffic free venue to boost bike handling skills, become familiar with group riding techniques and do some interval training. Groups are formed of differing ability levels from novices to experienced riders - so there’s something for everyone!
Juniors at Llandow – We hope to be able to offer some cycling training for juniors at Llandow – either with the seniors on Weds, or on an alternative night. Safety issues to be resolved first – if you are interested in your child/ren taking part in a session please email or let Debbie/Mike know. Novice Training Day - Being held on Saturday 17th April 2010. This is the first time we’ve run an event like this and it’s great to be collaborating with Cardiff Tri Club to make this day a real success. Good luck to everyone who attends and thanks to all the trainers Ogmore Valley Wheelers Time Trials Chris Tidball (Jenny’s other half) kindly sent this via email ‘I have been chatting with Jen (Dentry) about finding some time trials locally to try out race pace training/competition. She suggested that several people she had been speaking with at the tri club were interested in trying some different cycling events, but weren’t sure what was available. I think there is also a perception that some of the cycling clubs might be unwelcoming. I’m a member of OVW and we run a summer series of 10 time trials on the road between Ewenny and Llantwit Major. The races are on Wednesday evenings and I think the times are 1830 for registration with a 1900 start. The course is nominally 10 miles, though I don’t think it has been officially measured. Riders entering the series are expected to marshal, push or time keep on an event to avoid the normal situation of committee members having to do all of the boring jobs. For insurance reasons we are only allowed a very limited number of guest riders. Entry is free for OVW members. Pencoed Tri members would be welcome, however they would have to join OVW as a second claim member. This costs £10 for a year. Entry forms are available through the home page of our website.’ If any Pencoed Tri folk would be interested in riding then the best way to get in touch would be through the OVW forum. The link for this is http://www.ogmorevalleywheelers.co.uk/Forum/index.php Ed’s Note: Pencoed Tri are members of Cycling Time Trials Assoc. so I think we can take part without paying the £10. Any advice you want about your training, feel free to ask any of our coaches at our training sessions or on club night. Let Mike know if you are interested in coaching.

| Drovers Run – this was a fantastic success with numbers up on last year. Many thanks to all members who gave up their time to marshal – couldn’t have happened without you! Of particular note thanks to Caroline for wonderful bacon butties, Steve Rosewell for taking brilliant photos, Liz Lewis for the ultimate chocolate brownies.
Junior Triathlon and Fun2Tri Event – Sunday 30th May - Entries are starting to roll in following last years’ successful event which reached full capacity. Liz, Debbie and Hazel are progressing with race organisation – any help with publicity greatly appreciated. Will bring flyers/posters to training sessions – if you have children(7-16) who attend school, sports clubs, cubs/brownies etc and can help with leaflet distribution that would be great. Get your own kids and their friends entries in asap to guarantee a place. Fun2Tri has really manageable distances and is ideal for non-sporty types/novices and children who are not keen on competition – its not a timed wave. Big shout out for marshalls! (and bring along willing friends/family/wags/grannies!!) With all the lane and lap counters needed and to ensure the event runs smoothly we need a lot of marshalls. Help with course layout 9.30am-12 approx, help at the event 12.15-4pm approx. Many thanks. Tuska Triathlon – Sunday 25th July - We’re happy to announce that Tuska in 2010 has been chosen as a template for event accreditation in Wales. This means that the smooth organisation (expertly handled by Steve Butler) and the contributions of the club members has been recognised. It’s a fantastic and well-thought of event around the country and keeping it this way is paramount to the Club. Good luck to all who participate, and a big thanks to all those who’ll be marshalling. |

The total team time is the sum of the three legs with each leg time being based on the finish time of the slowest team member. The bike is on a refurbished cycle circuit and drafting is legal. The run takes place on the grass inner of the cycle track. The fee is £58 per team It would be great if we could field a couple of Pencoed Tri teams. We could have some team practice sessions at Llandow – anyone interested please email pencoedtri@live.com |
